NOTE: Magnetic card readers may not be compatible with your payment processor. Please check with your payment gateway whether it supports these types of USB readers for online payment processing.

If you use Square as your payment gateway, development is under way to support Square Terminal devices for Desktop and Mobile use.

Installing a magnetic credit card reader is simple. In most cases you can plug the card reader into a USB port on your computer and you're ready to go. This is the type of reader that will read a magnetic stripe on the back of a credit card. For more information on EMV and chip cards, check out this article.

Follow these steps to ensure that your credit card swipe is ready to be used with Brushfire:

  1. Plug the magnetic credit card reader into one of your computer's USB ports.
  2. Allow the device to install its drivers. On most computers (Windows and Mac) this happens automatically. Some versions of Windows might prompt you to install drivers associated with the device.
  3. Open up a text editor on your computer (Notepad or Text Edit will do).
  4. Make sure your cursor is in the text editor and swipe any card with a magnetic stripe (i.e. credit or debit card, grocery store loyalty card). A string of information should appear in the text editor.

Once you've made sure that your magnetic credit card reader is properly installed you're ready to begin using it with Brushfire. On the checkout page in Brushfire, make sure your cursor is in the credit card number field. Then swipe the credit card and the required information will be filled in. This works in both Point of Sale or Standard checkout mode.
